On paper, it was a blowout. Broadcom reported its best quarter ever, with sales surging and its all-important AI business absolutely on fire. And then, within minutes of the report hitting, the stock dropped more than 12% in after-hours trading — erasing over $300 billion in market value. Welcome to one of Wall Street's most confusing magic tricks: the great earnings report that tanks the stock.
The Numbers Were Genuinely Huge
Broadcom posted record quarterly revenue of $22.2 billion, up 48% from a year earlier. The star was its AI chip business, where revenue hit $10.8 billion — a staggering 143% jump from the same quarter last year. Demand for its custom AI accelerators and networking gear, the silicon that powers data centers for tech giants, is booming. By almost any normal measure, this was a triumph.
So What Spooked Investors?
One word: guidance. Wall Street doesn't pay for what a company did last quarter — it pays for what it expects next. Broadcom guided to about $16 billion in AI chip revenue for the current quarter, short of the roughly $17.2 billion analysts wanted. Worse, it left its full-year 2026 AI forecast unchanged, declining to raise a target investors expected to climb. When a stock is priced for perfection, merely great isn't good enough.
Two Comments That Made It Worse
On the earnings call, CEO Hock Tan added two notes that deepened the selloff. He acknowledged that Google would likely use multiple chip suppliers rather than leaning on Broadcom alone — a reminder that competition is real. And he warned that explosive AI chip sales are weighing on overall gross margins, because those chips carry thinner margins than Broadcom's traditional products.
The Bigger Picture: Priced for Perfection
Heading into the report, Broadcom closed at a record $495 a share. Stocks that have run that far leave little room for disappointment — any crack in the story can trigger an outsized reaction. It's a recurring theme across the AI trade in 2026: expectations have climbed so high that even spectacular results can fall short.
What Happens Next
Broadcom's own outlook still calls for AI chip revenue to grow more than 200% year-over-year to $16 billion next quarter, with total revenue up 84% to $29.4 billion. The business is still growing at a breakneck pace. The market's reaction was about expectations and margins, not collapsing demand — a distinction worth remembering when a headline screams "stock plunges."
